What is professional dental cleaning?
Professional dental cleaning refers to cleaning that’s undertaken by a trained hygienist. Your hygienist has specialist tools and equipment to carry out really comprehensive cleaning of your teeth and gums and can pay special attention to the areas that you can’t see or reach. They also have a much better view of your mouth, so they can spot any developing problems early, when they are more easily treated.

Who will I see during my hygiene treatment?
Paige graduated from Curtin University Western Australia with a Bachelors of Science in Oral Health Therapy. Passionate about preventative care and public health, Paige has a special knack for making apprehensive patients feel at ease in the dental chair.
She gained extensive experience working in public dentistry in Australia, where she focused on bringing accessible dental care to diverse communities. In 2023, Paige made the exciting move to London and obtained her GDC registration as a Dental Therapist.
Now, she’s thrilled to bring her skills and enthusiasm to her new patients in the UK. When Paige is not working, you’ll find her out for a run, catching up on an AFL game, or travelling Europe.

Your Hygiene Journey: A Step-by-Step Guide
Comprehensive oral health evaluation
During your first visit, our experienced hygienist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums, checking for signs of plaque buildup, gum disease, and other oral health concerns. We'll discuss your current oral care routine and identify areas that need special attention.
Scale and polish treatment
Using specialist tools and techniques, we'll remove stubborn plaque and tartar that regular brushing can't reach. Our gentle yet thorough cleaning process includes scaling to remove buildup and polishing to leave your teeth feeling smooth and looking brighter.
Personalised maintenance schedule
Based on your individual needs, we'll recommend the ideal frequency for your future hygiene appointments - typically every six months. You'll receive tailored advice on improving your home care routine to maintain that fresh, clean feeling between visits.Yes, this is all accurate based on standard dental hygiene practice.

Prevent gum disease
Preventing gum disease is one of the biggest benefits of hygiene appointments. Gum disease rarely causes any symptoms until it’s advanced, unless it’s detected by your hygienist. Since gum disease has been linked to serious health conditions like stroke and heart attack, it’s important to take steps to prevent it.
Signs of gum disease
Symptoms to look out for include:
- Red swollen gums
- Bleeding gums after brushing or flossing your teeth
- Bad breath
- An unpleasant taste in your mouth
- Teeth that seem loose
- An abscess that forms on the gum or under a tooth
If you are concerned you may have gum disease, book a consultation with our hygienist today.

Spotting other dental issues
Your hygienist can spot a variety of potential issues at your appointment, including but not limited to:
- Cavities
- Broken fillings
- Broken teeth
- Staining caused by poor dental habits
- Infection
The importance of staying on top of oral hygiene issues
If you're not experiencing obvious symptoms like pain or bleeding gums, you might think your teeth are perfectly fine. And they might be! But dental issues can crop up quickly and often without noticeable symptoms. Like most health problems, dental issues are usually easier to treat if they're caught early, before they get worse. That's why it's important to see your hygienist at Siha Dental regularly. They can keep an eye on your oral health, suggest changes to your brushing and flossing routine, and offer other valuable advice for keeping your teeth in great shape, like cutting back on fizzy drinks or flossing more often.
Maintain a beautiful smile
Although hygienists are here to help keep your teeth as healthy as possible, regular appointments can also give you the best chance of maintaining a beautiful smile. Over time, habits like drinking coffee, tea and red wine and smoking can increase your risk of dental staining. Your hygienist can offer scale and polish as part of your professional dental clean. This treatment improves your oral hygiene and helps remove mild staining, giving you a brighter and more attractive smile.
Dental hygienist appointment frequently asked questions
Although you can eat and drink whatever you’d like to after a professional dental clean, many people decide to wait for a few hours and simply enjoy just how clean their teeth feel.
Yes. Even if you no longer have any of your own teeth, there are still elements of your oral health that require checking and you should attend appointments as recommended by your dental hygienist.
Every patient is unique. Typically, we recommend that you have an appointment with our hygienist in Shepherd’s Bush every six months, but you should always follow the advice given to you personally on the day. For example, if your hygienist suspects that you might be developing issues with gum disease, they may recommend you come back for an additional check-up and clean in three months’ time. Rest assured that the advice you are given will be designed to optimise your oral health.
