Emergency Dental Care in Shepherds Bush: What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A sudden toothache at 10pm. A chipped tooth at work. A swollen face over the weekend. If you've ever found yourself in one of these situations, you'll know the frustration of not knowing whether it's serious enough to seek help, or who to even call.

At Siha Dental in Shepherd's Bush, we offer emergency dental appointments so that West London patients never have to suffer in silence or make unnecessary trips to A&E. But we also know that 'what counts as a dental emergency' isn't always obvious. This guide is here to help you work it out.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires prompt professional attention to relieve severe pain, prevent the situation from getting worse, or address a risk to your health. It doesn't necessarily mean something dramatic has happened , sometimes a seemingly minor issue can escalate quickly if left untreated.

Situations That Are Definitely a Dental Emergency

  • Severe, unrelenting toothache. Pain that is persistent, intense, or waking you up at night is a clear signal that something is wrong. This often points to infection, an abscess, or significant decay that needs urgent treatment.
  • Dental abscess. Swelling in your face, jaw, or neck alongside throbbing pain can indicate a dental abscess , a pocket of infection. This is serious and should never be left to resolve on its own. In some cases it can spread rapidly.
  • Knocked-out tooth. If a tooth has been completely knocked out, time is critical. Handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it in the socket or keep it in milk. Call us immediately , a tooth reimplanted within an hour has the best chance of survival.
  • Cracked or broken tooth causing pain. A crack that exposes the inner layers of the tooth can be extremely painful and is vulnerable to infection. Get it assessed as soon as possible.
  • Lost crown or filling causing pain or sensitivity. If it's causing significant discomfort or leaving a sharp edge that's cutting your cheek or tongue, come and see us.
  • Bleeding that won't stop. Significant bleeding from the mouth following an injury, extraction, or spontaneously should always be assessed promptly.
  • Swelling or infection spreading to the face or neck. This requires immediate attention , in some cases, dental infections can spread to the airway and become life-threatening.

What Might Not Be a Same-Day Emergency

Not every dental concern needs to be treated within hours, though it will still need attention soon:

  • A chipped tooth with no pain or sharp edges can usually wait for a routine appointment
  • A lost filling that isn't causing sensitivity can typically be managed within a few days
  • Mild, intermittent sensitivity to hot or cold may be worth monitoring but isn't necessarily urgent

If you're ever in doubt, call us. Our team will help you assess whether you need to come in immediately or whether it can wait.

Why Prompt Treatment Matters

One of the most common mistakes people make with dental emergencies is waiting , hoping the pain will go away on its own, or not wanting to bother a dentist. In most cases, dental problems don't resolve without treatment. An infection can spread. A crack can deepen. What might have been a simple fix can become a complex and costly procedure.

With NHS emergency dental access across London increasingly stretched, having a reliable private practice you can call is invaluable. At Siha Dental we offer evening and weekend appointments, meaning you're not left suffering until Monday morning.

What to Do While You Wait

  • Rinse with medical-grade saline and place the tooth in milk, call us so we can position the tooth back into position. The risk of permanent nerve damage increases after 60 minutes. The tooth can still be saved, but will need root canal treatment. (This is for Adult teeth only, baby teeth we just leave and let the area heal).
  • Over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen (if suitable for you) can help manage discomfort temporarily
  • Clove oil applied to the affected area can provide short-term relief for toothache
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods that may aggravate sensitivity
  • If a tooth has been knocked out, follow the steps above and call us immediately
  • For facial swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help reduce inflammation
